Seed Studios in collaboration with the Royal Northern College of Music; Celebration Concert 30th April 2010.
Seed Studios members performed their own unique compositions this evening in culmination of the collaboration between the studio and Royal Northern College of Music. Each participant had to undergo a rigorous application process, dating back to October 2009. A lot of hard work went into each composition resulting in astonishing performances from all;
Rob Coleman Feel The Bullet Bite A Quentin Tarantino-esqe, haunting, yet amazingly invigorating, South American influenced ballad, sung in Japanese. The juxtaposition of understated guitar and lustrous flute set up the emotional content of the vocal and strings that follow.
Abdul Khan Pakistan A heartfelt, emotional rendition of a self-penned personal homage to Pakistan, sung in Urdu. There is much to admire in this song, not least the guitar sparing with the mandolin and the piano leading for the cello to follow.
Phil Kanes Mixed Up Relationship A very effective and simple acoustic guitar rendition of an autobiographical song accompanied by strings, evoking a myriad of styles and classics, tantalisingly and constantly just out of reach of recognition.
Dave Kidd Its You Another acoustic offering of a bigraphical nature backed by delicate electric minimalistic guitar and piano, as well as strings, and a powerful yet controlled voice. The whole song is rhythmically held together by the pulse of a triangle.
Rose Niland Colours An extremely ambitious, yet stylishly orchestrated, string led three part harmony on cello, viola and violin. A drum beat that holds the piece together controlled by Rose's amazing voice gives this song its beauty and uniqueness.
Lynn Kirkman Fallen This song was influenced by the South West of England where Lynn once lived. The sea and coastal reminiscences can clearly be felt through the rhythms and subject matter of this folk masterpiece.
Mark Jones Recreational Text A relatively new member of Seed Studios has composed an ultra-modern, computer music inspired techno-dance track with a string accompaniment. This clever, catchy song highlights the diversity of talent on offer.
Tommy Lacey By The Time I Get To Pheonix The longest serving member of Seed Studios shows his professionalism yet again in a new arrangement of a 60's classic. Sweeping strings, guitar, bass, piano and drums help to make Tommy's originality shine once again.
Jamal Lewis Unconditional Love A jazzy free-form string-induced instrumental from Jamal gladdens the heart. His drumming keeps a steady beat whilst bass and piano will make everybody else tap their feet and smile.
Jeffrey Singh Solo Train Another drummer entertains with his instrumental composition. Delicate bass and alternating guitar chord strumming and picking balanced with cello and violin crafted parts perfect this performance. This up tempo pop/waltz can't help but move the listener.
Steve Kirk That's The Way That It Is Guitar, strings, flute, piano, mandolin and violin are much in evidence in this piece. Full of metaphor this song's subject matter deals with what this night is all about, mental health, well-being and methods of coping. Musically influenced by 60's pop music, this song is a delight.
Michael Michaelides Rain and Tears Sung by Rose Niland this song was inspired by a poem written by Michael. With music by Paul O'Neill this song was a mini-musical with all the highs and lows one would expect from a song about regretting the temporary abscence of a soul-mate and reminiscences of even better times.
Lorraine Greenidge I'm in Love A soul singer with a wonderful voice. Tonight's performance is Lorraine's RNCM debut and she has composed a beautiful balled with which to introduce herself. Soulful bolero type love song that builds to an emotional peak.
The theatre was full to capacity with a wildly enthusiastic audience who played their part in giving much encouragement to all involved. Seed Studios would like to thank the following people from the RNCM without whom the evening would not have been possible; Julie, Mellissa, Emma, Amy, Holly and Lilli. This was the 3rd year that this event had been held and was the best to date in every respect.
